Fall Into Volunteering with SC4K
After working more than 20 years in corporate America, I knew retirement wouldn’t mean slowing down completely. Like many people, I wanted to keep contributing, stay connected, and hold onto a sense of purpose. That’s exactly what I’ve found in my part-time role as Volunteer Manager at Shoes and Clothes for Kids (SC4K).
Falling for My Role
This role keeps me engaged, lets me meet incredible people, and gives me the chance to show gratitude for the privileges I’ve enjoyed. And the mission? It couldn’t be easier to support! Breaking barriers to school attendance by providing new shoes, clothes, and school supplies to local students in need is something that resonates with everyone.
One of the best parts of this work is that there’s truly no “typical” volunteer. Every week, I hear from:
- Companies eager to schedule team-building activities.
- Community groups looking for meaningful service opportunities.
- Individuals wanting to give back while meeting new people.
- Students of all ages ready to learn and lend a hand.
What SC4K Offers Volunteers
At SC4K, we offer one-time volunteer opportunities for special events or short-term projects, as well as ongoing commitments for those who want to get involved on a weekly or monthly basis. Volunteers help with everything from sorting and counting items to stocking shelves in our Free Store. These are tasks that directly support students, teachers, and families while expanding our staff’s capacity.
And behind every email or phone call is a story.
- A few years ago, a middle school teacher reached out wanting to introduce her students to volunteerism. Before they came in, we connected on Zoom to talk about SC4K and answer their thoughtful questions. When the students arrived, we matched them with age-appropriate tasks, and their enthusiasm was contagious.
- Earlier this year, I heard from a young man who was traveling to Cleveland for a national fencing competition. His group, FencersdoGood, had such an inspiring story and passion for service. After several conversations (and a Zoom call with his mom as proctor), student-athletes and parents from USA Fencing joined us for a day of volunteering. Their energy and commitment left a lasting impression. When reflecting upon his experience, he shared: “The work SC4K [does] is incredible! This is the first place that I’ve seen that gives NEW clothes and other items to kids. Usually, most places like this give out used items. I think this goes a long way to giving kids in need the confidence that they need because of their situation. As a ‘kid’ myself, it was great to help other kids.”
These stories highlight what I love most about volunteering. People from all walks of life come together, each contributing in their own way, and all leave with the same reward: the satisfaction of making a difference to kids in need.
