From Vision to Impact: Allan C. Krulak’s Legacy at SC4K
Shoes and Clothes for Kids (SC4K) mourns the loss of Allan C. Krulak, Chair Emeritus, who passed away on Saturday, May 10, at the age of 87. Allan wasn’t just a leader; he was the spirit behind our mission and a dedicated voice for children in need across Cleveland. His legacy lives on through every child we serve and every step forward we take.
A Legacy Rooted in Community
From SC4K’s earliest days, Allan’s fingerprints have been all over our mission. Back when we were simply “Shoes for Kids,” Allan joined forces with Morrie Sayre and Irv Fine, brainstorming around kitchen tables and mapping out grassroots fundraisers. Those meetings planted the seeds of a mission that would eventually serve hundreds of thousands of students across Northeast Ohio.
His presence at school assemblies, where he watched children receive their very first pair of new shoes, was a regular reminder of the difference our work makes. As SC4K expanded to include clothes and school supplies, Allan’s dedication only grew stronger. Every major campaign, every milestone event, every strategic move we felt the steady hand of his leadership and the warmth of his heart.
A Visionary Leader
Allan’s contributions spanned decades. As Board Chair and later Chair Emeritus, he guided SC4K through growth and transformation, always with an eye toward the needs of the kids we serve. He was an active member of our Executive Committee, offering invaluable institutional memory and a deep understanding of our mission’s roots.
In 2012, we honored Allan’s extraordinary impact by naming our highest recognition after him. The Allan C. Krulak Golden Shoe Award celebrates those whose unwavering commitment mirrors Allan’s own.
A Mentor and Friend
Allan’s legacy extends beyond his official roles. He built lasting relationships that made our organization stronger. SC4K Life Director and retired Eaton Corporation executive, Jim Mason, shared this touching reflection:
“Al and I served in the same role for our companies, which brought us together. He was passionate about Shoes and Clothes for Kids and never took ‘no’ for an answer. When I retired, Al didn’t waste any time getting me on the Board. We shared a great friendship, had lots of fun, and raised a lot of money together so more kids could have new shoes and clothes and not miss school. Those students are our future. I will miss my dear friend.”
Scott Simon, former SC4K Board Chair and Life Director, echoed those sentiments:
“Allan Krulak was more than a mentor… he was an inspiration. A velvet hammer of passion and effectiveness, he never raised his voice or let his smile fade, all while ensuring that the most deserving of our community—primarily children and families—got the help, the clothes, the shoes, and the love they needed. His loss leaves a huge hole in our hearts and our community.”
A Life of Impact
Allan’s generosity knew no boundaries. His philanthropy crossed lines of race, religion, and politics, grounded in a belief that helping children was simply the right thing to do. He had a unique gift for drawing others into the SC4K mission often turning casual connections into dedicated advocates and lifelong friends.
Our current Board Chair, Kelly Rudloff, shared these words:
“Allan was an amazing founder and leader at Shoes and Clothes for Kids. His unwavering commitment to the organization, the people we serve, and our staff and volunteers was profound, from his time at Forest City through his retirement. As our Chair Emeritus, he was always there to provide leadership and guidance. His presence will be deeply missed.”
A Personal Tribute
For me, Allan was a mentor, supporter, and advocate for over 15 years. His compassion and vision shaped not only SC4K but my own leadership journey. I’m especially grateful to his wife, Judy, whose care and quiet strength helped make his ongoing involvement possible.
Shoes and Clothes for Kids remains committed to continuing the vital work he championed for so many years by providing new shoes, clothes, and school supplies to students in need. His legacy will forever inspire our mission.
